E.ON UK runs the GBP75 million project that generates 60 MW of power from its 30 turbines built by Danish manufacturer Vestas. The farm is located three miles off the coast on a sandbank known as the Middle Scroby Sands, closer to the coast than future planned developments.

The project follows on from the involvement of E.ON and Vestas in the Blyth Offshore farm and the experience gained from Blyth has aided in making Scroby Sands the most advanced commercial offshore farm in UK waters.

Both projects have benefited from European Commission Thermie funding and will provide valuable lessons for future offshore projects through a European Union information feedback contract.

“Connecting Scroby Sands to the grid establishes the UK as the world’s second biggest generator of offshore wind power,” said UK secretary of state for trade and industry, Patricia Hewitt.

"Our plans for further offshore wind farms around the UK represent the world’s biggest ever expansion of renewable energy, plans that are good for the environment, good for Britain’s energy needs and good for the economy.”
